A Nation Under Siege

During the winter of 1991, Croatia found itself in a desperate struggle for survival as it faced an invasion by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). The JNA, backed by Serbian nationalist forces, sought to crush Croatia's fledgling independence movement.

A Determined Resistance

Despite being vastly outnumbered and outgunned, the Croatian people refused to give up their newfound freedom. Led by President Franjo Tudjman, they mobilized a ragtag army of volunteers and civilians and fought back against the invading forces. Nina Batinic, Marin Blazevic, and Sandra Dekanic were just three of the many brave individuals who played crucial roles in Croatia's defense.

Batinic, a nurse, provided medical care to wounded soldiers and civilians. Blazevic, a former army officer, organized and led guerrilla resistance units. Dekanic, a journalist, used her voice to rally support for Croatia's cause.

Together, they and countless others fought tirelessly against the JNA. They endured harsh winter conditions, fought in fierce street battles, and never gave up hope.

A Lasting Legacy

The Croatian people's determination and resilience during the winter of 1991 ultimately led to their victory. The JNA was forced to withdraw, and Croatia emerged as an independent nation.

The legacy of this struggle lives on today. The bravery and sacrifice of the Croatian people is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, freedom and independence can be defended against all odds.
